Skyfaring by Mark Vanhoenacker
The author is a professional pilot who clearly love, love, loves flying. He writes movingly about flight itself and the nature of being a commercial pilot but it’s clear that his first love is the sky and anytime he’s airborne, he’s happy.
Vanhoenacker was always intrigued by planes growing up but he didn’t take flying lessons until his late 20s, after a graduate degree in England and a career as a management consultant in Boston. These days he flies out of London and regularly makes trips around the world.
Skyfaring is beautifully written. It’s really almost like poetry hearing him describe life in the sky and even the day-to-day realities of being a modern pilot. I always like peering into the mind of someone so passionate about a task or career.
